Surface Dressing

Surfaces described as surface dressed shall have a single/double layer of chippings applied to a hot sprayed coat of bitumen emulsion.

This is best applied between the months of March and October with a surface temperature range of 12-35 degrees Celsius but it is advisable for preparation work to be carried out well in advance. All surfaces that are not to be sprayed will be protected from bitumen spray drift and all adjacent surfaces shall be masked up prior to starting works and removed on completion. All areas will be left clean, all rubbish removed and any splashes/drift shall be thoroughly cleaned off.

Bitumen Emulsion

The bitumen emulsion shall be C67BC hot applied surface dressing emulsion or KE93P hot applied intermediate surface dressing emulsion. Cut back binders or lower bitumen content binders will not be used. The rate of application shall be as defined in Road Note 39.

Chippings

The chippings shall be double washed 6mm/10mm/ 14mm and applied at the rates indicated in Road Note 39 but the rate may be increased in pedestrian areas to reduce possible contact with tar following completion. The type of chipping shall be golden gravel (buff)/Red Granite (pink)/Steel Slag (dark grey) /Calcitic Limestone (white)/Grey Granite (grey).

Rolling

Once laid, the chippings shall be lightly rolled with rubber drummed roller.

Calibration

All equipment shall carry records of calibration, to demonstrate that the target rates of spread are achieved.
