Driveway Transformation in Hadleigh, Suffolk
Lakeside Surfacing was commissioned to replace a deteriorating concrete driveway at a residential property in Hadleigh, Suffolk. The existing surface was cracked, overrun with weeds, and negatively impacting the property’s overall curb appeal. In short, the project called for a thoughtful redesign, improved structural integrity, and a finish that complemented recent upgrades made to the home.
Client Objectives
The homeowners aimed to:
- Replace the damaged concrete driveway with a more visually appealing upgrade
- Match a series of recent property improvements with a modern surface
- Address uneven terrain and structural flaws for better functionality
- Enhance the approach to the property with a more inviting and polished look
Key Challenges
Several site-specific challenges had to be addressed, including:
- An old lead cast gas main running beneath the driveway, complicating excavation
- A heavily cracked and weed-infested concrete surface requiring full removal
- A sloped section needing extra structural support
- Adjusting the driveway angle to meet the road with precision grading
Design & Planning
After careful analysis, we proposed a custom block paving solution to meet both the practical and aesthetic goals. The design included:
- Full removal of the existing concrete surface
- A sleeper retaining wall made from reclaimed railway sleepers for added strength and visual appeal
- Application of a weed-suppressing membrane beneath all surface layers
- Reshaping the driveway gradient to improve transition and flow to the road
Technical Solution
The driveway installation followed a multi-layered strategy to ensure stability and longevity:
- Excavation to a depth of 200mm
- Weed membrane installed to prevent future growth
- Sleeper retaining wall constructed to support the slope and add character
- Compacted hardcore base laid for structural integrity
- Brick edging installed to define the perimeter
- Block paving surface laid in a colour scheme to complement the upgraded home
Infrastructure Complication: The Gas Main
Midway through excavation, we uncovered an old lead cast gas pipe running from the house to the road. We presented the client with two options:
- Pause the project to allow the gas board to replace the pipe (at no cost to the homeowner)
- Proceed with caution, adjusting the design to work around the existing pipe
The client chose to proceed immediately, opting for the first solution. As a result, we:
- Encased the gas main in concrete for protection
- Built a slight crown into the driveway surface to maintain strength
- Limited the gradient shift at the driveway entrance
This resulted in a minor “dive-off” effect where the driveway meets the road—an acceptable compromise that did not affect the overall appearance or function of the finished project.
Execution & Client Feedback
Despite the complexities, the project was a success. The homeowners were delighted with the end result and shared their appreciation for the transformation.
